Self-Fulfilling Prophecy & Public Speech
It might sound unbelievable, but from time to time we can quite accurately predict our future actions, or situations we can find ourselves in.
When our expectations and predictions influence our behaviour, we come across the effect of Self-Fulfilling Prophecy.
The main idea of the concept is that what a mind focuses on is literally directing the mind to attend to or produce whatever it is being focused on. Thus, the act of prophesy itself causes the prophesy to come true.
The Self-Fulfilling Prophecy can manifest literally all spheres of our life, but I will concentrate on the sphere of Public Speaking, which is of interest for me (and for you as well, I hope :))
I think I will consider two aspects of the effect of Self-Fulfilling Prophecy on our behaviour: negative and positive expectations.
I will start my reflection with the consequences of the SFP based on our negative thoughts and predictions.
Just imagine:
You are to give a Talk tomorrow at 10 am.
It’s 11:30 pm. Your speech had been written long ago. But you still keep adding remarks trying to make it sound better or more impressive. You come to realize: what sounded smoothly yesterday, sounds more than awkward now.

It’s 1:00 am. You’re in panic. Even though you’ve learnt your speech by heart, you feel you’re not confident enough to share it with the audience. You get one of those little annoying thoughts: “I am sure to say something stupid that will make no sense. I’ll get too nervous,...I’ll fail..”
It’s 2:30 am. There’s not much time left to sleep. You’re trying your best to convince yourself: “I've learned the speech by heart, it'll work out successfully". But then you realize: "I won't get enough sleep this night => I will feel stressed and tired => I will confuse all those ideas => ruin the structure => fail".
It's 10:05 am. You are called-out. With your shaking knees you're approaching the front side of the room. You start to speak, your voice is trembling. You stutter, mumble and frequently forget your next point while speaking => you're disappointed => depressed => will you ever speak in Public again...?

I think it is clear to all of us that positive thinking is able to positively influence behaviour and so bring about better results.
You are saturated with great expectations of your future speech. You're enthusiastic, so much excited to share your ideas with the audience (..,or maybe the whole World?..) - can you predict the final result of your given Talk?
You are confident, your speech is clear, the structured plot and the full understanding of your flow of thought lets you improvise, and your remarks are appropriate and persuasive.
I believe, this way your speech is very likely to meet your expectations, to be fruitful and successful.
