CHALLENGE #4

“If something doesn’t challenge you, then it doesn’t change you.”
Fred Devito.

This quote says it all. Whenever we face any challenge, we learn. It makes us grow as personalities. However, in our society, most of us are going through life not facing any real challenges anymore. We are way too comfortable.

As new week means new challenge, I’m going to share my experience on my way of becoming more social and less public-frightened.

 So here’s this week’s challenge:

'Call a food delivery service, and order a dish pretending to be a native English speaker.

What I did was calling Delivery service of a well-known restaurant with a purpose of ordering the seafood salad.

That was not an easy task, mostly because the call-operator was not good at English.

When a female person picked up the phone, the first thing I asked was:

“Excuse me, is there any member of your staff who speaks English? I’m afraid, my Russian is too bad”. The girl answered that she couldn’t understand what I was talking about. Then I asked her if I could order the “seafood salad”. Again, she had no clue what I was asking her for. The only thing she could get was, obviously, “salad”. “What salad?” – She asked me. I had to enumerate the ingredients of the typical seafood salad: prawns, mussels, salmon, squid. “Fish?” – She asked me again. –“Right, fish, shrimps, mussels” – She knew the word “shrimps” – so probably I should have used this one instead of “prawns”. :))

After all, I got my order, and, to my surprise, there was actually a seafood salad.

I could definitely leave a positive feedback on my challenge. I was satisfied with the result I achieved. I learned that it is possible to deliver a certain piece of information, even if you’re not speaking the same language.

The situation proves, that you should never be scared that people may not understand you, even if you‘re speaking the language you both know. You can always find a way out through breaking the barriers and establishing the social connection.

Have you ever experienced anything like that?
